HOW TO HELP IF YOU LEARN A CHILD IS SEXUALLY ABUSED
1. Don't Deny the problem
Believe the child, no matter how hard it is.
2. Control your emotions
Stay calm. Try not to panic or loose control. Fear and anger are normal reactions but can frighten the child. Let the child know that your feelings are not directed to him or her. Never blame, punish or embarrass the child.
3. Give emotional support
Tell the child he/she is not to be blame and was right to tell. Give reassurance that he/she is safe and that no harm will come from telling. Let the child ask questions. Give answers in terms that he/she can understand.
4. Get information
Do not force the child to talk. If he/she is not ready to talk about the incident try to find out as much as possible. If the abuser was a stranger, try to get a description of physical features, car, etc.
5. Immediately contact
The appropriate social agency.
